Today was a moment in the careers of all the Saints boys where they can be immensely proud for the way they conducted themselves on and off the park. Lymm are top of the local tree and rightly so but I am sure they know they were in a game today. Our commitment , effort and desire knew no bounds but unfortunately it was against a very spirited well drilled Lymm machine.
After weeks of fighting the weather this match finally got underway on a perfect pitch ,played in perfect conditions by two very committed talented teams. Lymm started the brighter but Saints managed to halt the attack by sound midfield defence, Harry and Robert in the centres had great games tackling their hearts out all day. The away team showed great skill in their attacking ambition by being able to move the point of attack from one side to the other, by linking play and recycling. Saints managed to put out only so many fires before Lymm spotted a chink of light at the end of the tunnel and proceeded to pile through with force to score the opening try which along with all the others was duly converted. Saints stuck manfully to the task and were asking their own questions of the Lymm defence, not least Sean (H) and Pietro who enjoyed strong games and asked plenty of their opponents. Lymm went on to score another before half time to go into the break 14-0 to the good.
Normal order resumed after the break Saints with extinguishers in hand put out as many as they possibly could before another well taken try stretched the visitors lead. Lymm showed good body positions in the tight and at the breakdown and this helped them secure a lot of ball for their backs to work on, this is an area for improvement for us if we wish to dine at this table .
Midway through the second half Saints worked arguably the best move of the match that saw Harry peel off down the short side ,commit a defender and off load a sublime ball to the ever eager Ewan to race in for the only try conceded against this team this season, and well deserved it was too!
Lymm bagged another couple of tries but not before being halted by some fine tackles by this weeks MOM – Sean(W).
Thanks to Conal for your excellent officiating.
Thanks to Nick and all the Lymm boys for a great game, and thanks for your kind words about the Saints boys , you have set the bar high but we promise to make the effort to reach it, good luck in the next round and we hope you will be drinking from the cup whilst we attempt to eat from the Plate……..
