Saints U14 are out of the cup after a thrilling match away to Chester.
We couldnt have had a tougher draw .
Two very good side were well matched, it was 'a game of two halves' with Chester dominating the early encounters. They were out of the blocks much quicker than us and we really struggled to hold them and it was only some excellent midfield defence that kept it down to one try.
As the half progressed we settled and we started to gain parity up front winning some more ball and we started to look ourselves.
The second half was a different story Saint upped a gear the forwards secured better ball and we looked much more of a threat. It was now Chesters turn to defend. They were very well organised and we kept knocking on the door without success.
After all the pressure Chester got a contentious penalty try. A kick through and chase for the ball, both player fell down about 35 yards out and the ref deemed it to be intentional on our part and that a try would have been scored. 12-0 to Chester. Remember the ref is always right and we must accept the decision.
This seemed to galvanise us. We came back strong and determined, showing all the spirit that carried us through last season.
James McN scored two tries after good play with forwards and backs linking well. 12-10 Chester. Saints were now in the driving seat and looked strong. We forced a penalty under the sticks, Jack P was the coolest person on the pitch and converted. We were now ahead 13-12 with only a few minutes to go.
Credit to Chester who came back strongly and forced a try after some good play showing great spirit and team play.
There was no time to respond and Chester took the tie.
It was a great and exciting game to watch. We must take the positives and keep playing the right way, we can get even better.
Chester have a very good side and it shows how far we have come.
I know all the lads were upset but thats rugby. We did all we could and on another day it could have been a different result, hopefully it will make us stronger and more determined.
Thanks and well done to all at Chester. Go on and win the Cup you are definately good enough.
