Our good friends from Wirral thankfully agreed to switch this fixture to their place as unfortunately Malone Field has taken a battering of late and needed a much welcomed breather.
Whilst the pitch was heavy it was playable and thanks must go to Steve and his band of merry men for making it possible .
It was agreed to play the game over 3 periods .Saints started the first period strongly dominating the scrum and winning all of their own ball and most of the oppositions, this created the perfect platform from which to launch our backs which allowed Mr Wheels Josh to race in for 2 early tries.Saints continued to dominate proceedings up front and considering the conditions kept ball in hand relatively well , but when they dropped the ball Wirral were on hand to punish with their own Mr Wheels who was able to punish us with a couple of his own . Saints managed further tries from Harry and Ben during the first 2 sessions.
Once Wirral settled parity at the scrum was found and large parts of the game were played in the middle section of the park with the occasional foray into each other's red zone ( a term I've learned from Woodsy).
Saints held a 33 points to 15 lead going into the final session and when Mr Wheels again put the jet skates on for a solo 70 mtr effort the game was put beyond doubt.
Wirral never gave up and worked tirelessly in the last 10 minutes and as Saints gave away penalties and territory they were able to score 3 unanswered tries to bring the score line closer. The penalty count weighed heavily in favour of Wirral and this is something we must address if we are to progress further in the Cheshire Cup .
Final score 38-30 in favour of Saints .
Thanks to Steve and Co for being the perfect hosts as always to Connor for his excellent officiating and to Moggy for agreeing to be the 4th Official !!
