All at Anselmians are deeply saddened to hear of the death of local rugby legend, John Lander.
“Landy” played for the Old Boys in the 1950s before going on to considerable acclaim as a front-row forward for New Brighton with more than 400 1st XV appearances. Whilst at New Brighton he was a regular choice for Cheshire at Loose-head Prop.
He never forgot his roots and returned to Malone Field in the 1980-81 season to coach Old Anselmians to the semi-finals of the Cheshire Cup.
As well as playing and coaching to a high level, John was an empathetic and inspirational school teacher, specialising in many pastoral roles at Henry Meoles School in Moreton.
Countless players and ex-pupils are grateful to John for his sage advice and sympathetic guidance, all delivered with a gentle, deprecatory sense of humour.
After his retirement, John would be seen at his beloved Harts Field heartily welcoming former players and adversaries or making an almost daily pilgrimage to Wallasey Golf Club.
His death, on 17th December, after a fall, is a grievous blow to all who knew him and our sincere condolences are sent to Gill, and their three children.
May he rest in peace.
